LPFM: Outta the House and Into the Senate!

After ten years, tens of thousands of petition signatures, and hundreds of phone calls -- the Local Community Radio Act was passed by the entire House of Representatives last night.

I’m still recovering from the spontaneous dance party that broke out a little after 7pm when we watched it go down on C-SPAN.

Over a decade ago, the shockingly simple and novel idea of bringing local radio stations back to our communities was stopped short by commercial broadcasting interests. What the House did last night was recognize the interests of people over the profits of commercial broadcasters. They acknowledged the important resource local media bring to our communities – especially in a time where we are losing critical news and information sources in our towns and cities.

Or perhaps our lawmakers are also tired of hearing Miley Cyrus on repeat. The bottom line is, there are so many reasons to support this bill, and we applaud them for agreeing.

Now it’s up to the Senate, who have finally realized they need to pass some legislation before they go home for the year. We’ve got to try and get this bill on their agenda.

In the spirit of the holiday season, this bill is truly a no-brainer gift for Congress to give the public. It’s a bill that brings people together regardless of their political ideology. It’s a bill that won’t cost us a penny. It’s a bill that will enrich our lives with local debate, more music and new voices by putting hundreds – possibly thousands – of new community controlled radio stations on the air.

So thank you to the House of Representatives for showing us that people power can still win in Washington. Now let’s see the Senate do the same.

One of the foremost

One of the foremost non-legislative functions of the Congress is the power to investigate and to oversee the executive branch. Congressional oversight is usually delegated to committees and is facilitated by Congress' subpoena power. Congress also has the exclusive power of removal, allowing impeachment and removal of the President, federal judges and other federal officers.
