It is worth celebrating that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting recently elected a new chairman – Ernest Wilson III, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California – who is ready to move public media into the digital age.
Wilson’s election is an indication of change underway at the CPB. In an interview last week, he showed some encouraging signs that the corporation may in fact be ready to commit to a vision for new public media.
The timing for big changes in public media is certainly right. As Wilson himself says, “we are at another 1967 moment, when the stars are aligned.” Forty-plus years after the passing of the original legislation that established the CPB, we are overdue for another look at what Wilson calls the “technological evolution and social change that have happened since then.”
Wilson believes that to achieve what the CPB refers to as the “three Ds” – dialog, digitization and diversity – the agency needs to prioritize both short-term and medium-term solutions. One short-term solution he outlined is to provide struggling stations with the financial resources needed to adequately serve their audiences.
Wilson believes the long-term solution lies in that “1967 moment:”
In 1967 President Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act. But that happened because the Carnegie Foundation and Republican and Democratic senators and a whole variety of stakeholders came together, growing out of educational television, and said we want to do something broader and bolder with greater vision to better serve the American people.
Here at NewPubicMedia.org, we agree that it is indeed Public Media’s Moment. The collapse of commercial journalism, the disappearance of local newspapers and the citizen engagement opportunities enabled by new technologies present us with an unprecedented moment to re-imagine public media for the 21st century. That’s why we believe a White House Commission on Journalism and Public Media is an essential step towards achieving this new vision.
It’s time we come to terms with the fact that our information needs can never be adequately met by a commercial media system that sells its audiences to advertisers. The demand for social and civic media has never been higher, and public media has an unprecedented chance to innovate and grow.
With Wilson steering the CPB ship, we hope to see big changes ahead. His optimism is an encouraging sign:
When my students come in, they say this is the most exciting time to be a journalist and a communicator in the history of the world because we have more technological assets and tools than we have ever had before.
So, I think this is a very hopeful time for American journalism broadly, and for public media specifically. What a great time to be doing this.
At the bottom of the first
At the bottom of the first page of the story entitled "CPB: Dialog, Digitalization and Diversity with New Chairman," dated September 22, 2009, and written by Candace Clement, there is a link (the word "more" followed by a horizontal arrow pointing to the right), blue in color, that - when pressed/clicked-on - does nothing other than refresh the page - page one...the one I just finished reading. What it does NOT do is link/take you to another page - the next page (i.e. page 2) - of the story. This type of faux pas is indicative of a lack of professionalism, and especially disturbing because it can only be the result of something mundane and pedestrian: a technician's forgetfulness or lack of diligence, and/or quality control by a supervisor. I say "especially disturbing" because a small bit of something as simple as basic oversight techniques (i.e. quality control) in the form of checklists is all that is necessary to prevent such an occurrence. It is just good business practice to assign some member(s) of your staff the duty of ensuring that your finished product performs as it should through the timeless, tried-and-true method of double-checking.
Please take these words in the manner that they are intended: not as a reproach, but as constructive criticism. I DO appreciate your organizations philosophy, goals, watchfulness regarding the best interests of the U.S. citizens and our country's overall health, needs, success etc. If that was not the case, I would not have used/wasted any of my most valuable possession - time - to write this communique. I want you to succeed in your efforts to provide a steady and reliable flow of insightful information which we - the public - need/require in order to protect ourselves, and our country. Just, please, try to use more care in the production of your services.
Thanks, and keep up the good work.
